Funding under the Community Preservation Act depends upon several variables, so it is impossible to make exact predictions about how much communities will receive. However, this section provides rough estimates for the amount your community could obtain for affordable housing, open space, and historic preservation.

Cities and towns that adopt the CPA obtain community preservation funds by two means - a local property tax surcharge and state matching funds. Three major factors impact the amount a community ultimately receives under the CPA:

  • local property valuation and levy rates
  • local decisions about CPA surcharge percentage and exemptions, and
  • number and type of other communities participating
