Boston City Council Public Hearing on CPA Adoption for November Ballot

Boston City Council CPA HearingMar. 30, 2016: The Boston City Council Committee on Government Operations held a public hearing yesterday afternoon to discuss whether or not to place the question of CPA adoption on the city’s November ballot. More than 160 Boston CPA supporters from all over the city packed the mid-day City Council hearing and, over the course of the three hour session, had the opportunity to hear multiple panels and local representatives testify.

If approved, Boston voters will have the opportunity to choose whether to implement a 1% CPA property tax surcharge, with exemptions for low-income homeowners and low-income & moderate-income senior homeowners. The estimated average cost to homeowners would be $23 a year if adopted. Local CPA revenues generated by this surcharge, along with annual state matching funds, would be used to fund affordable housing outdoor recreation, historic preservation, and open space projects.

Boston City Council is expected to make a decision on the ballot measure within the coming weeks. Until then, be sure to check out the following links for more information and coverage on the hearing.
