CPA Adoption Update: Burlington Places CPA Adoption on November Ballot

Burlington CPA BAnnerThe town of Burlington is the newest community to pass the initial hurdle of CPA adoption by approving of an adoption measure at their town meeting. Advocates from the "YES CPA Burlington" campaign made a detailed presentation on the merits of the CPA program to town representatives - and the end result was that the measure passed by a clear majority. Burlington will now join four other cities and towns that will be voting on CPA adoption during the November 8th state election.

Voters in Burlington will now decide whether or not to adopt a 1.5% CPA surcharge for their community with exemptions for the first $100,000 of residential property, the first $100,000 of commercial property, and for low income and low & moderate income senior homeowners. Should the town adopt CPA, they are expected to raise approximately $1.7 million in local CPA revenues annually for outdoor recreation, historic preservation, affordable housing, and open space projects. Adopting CPA would also make the town eligible to receive annual distributions of funds from the statewide Community Preservation Trust Fund, monies that are available only to communities that have adopted the Act.

2022 has proven to be another busy year for CPA adoption, with two towns adopting the program in the spring and five more communities already on the November ballot. We will continue to update our Upcoming CPA Elections page as town meetings and city councils weigh in on CPA adoption throughout the summer.
