South Hadley Residents Launch CPA Campaign Website

South Hadley Launches CPA Campaign SiteMar. 17, 2016: After a special town meeting vote in South Hadley last November, CPA was advanced to the Spring 2016 ballot. On Tuesday, April 12th the residents of South Hadley will have the chance vote on CPA adoption during their Annual Town Election. South Hadley will be the first of three communities that will be voting on CPA this spring, followed by Abington on April 30th and Oxford on May 17th. With the days counting down, a group of South Hadley residents and proponents of CPA have launched a new website (www.votecpasouthhadley.org) and Facebook page promoting the adoption campaign.

In South Hadley, voters will decide whether or not to adopt a 1.5% CPA surcharge for their community, with exemptions for the first $100,000 of residential property value and the first $100,000 of commercial property value. With a 1.5% CPA surcharge and the aforementioned exemptions, the town would raise approximately $216,000 in local CPA revenues annually for recreation, historic preservation, affordable housing, and open space projects. Adopting CPA will also make the city eligible to receive annual distributions of funds from the statewide Community Preservation Trust Fund, monies that are available only to communities that have adopted the Act. The annual cost to the average South Hadley homeowner would be about $35 according to information provided by the city.

The "Vote CPA for South Hadley" campaign is currently meeting with town boards and committees to discuss the benefits of CPA and how it address a number of local needs. Some of the projects that CPA adoption could make possible include the preservation of the historic Old Firehouse Museum, renovations of the town’s parks & playgrounds, and the development of plans to address local housing needs.
