Historic Library Preservation, Lenox

The historic Lenox library (on the National Register of Historic Places) was owned by a private library association which began to experience severe financial trouble just as the town voted to adopt CPA. After quickly setting up its CPA program, the town voted to use its CPA funds to pay the annual debt service incurred on a ten year bond for the purpose of purchasing the Lenox library building, and saving it from possible foreclosure. The purchase also allowed Lenox to acquire a small park located on the side of the library that had been eyed for development to help with the library association’s debt. One of the few open spaces in the town’s center, this park will now be permanently available for the enjoyment of the townspeople.
