Westport Town Farm Historic Research Project

To compile historic research in three areas for the Westport Town Farm: 1) the early history of the farm built around deed searches, wills, and family histories mostly centered around Daniel and Stephen Wilcox families; 2) the farm changing into the Westport Town Farm and further documenting the whole system of Poor Farms in New England; 3) early Paupers Reports (Westport's first town reports) and the Overseers of the Poor. Who were the inmates of the poor farm and what tasks and chores were expected of them? CPC funds are for researchers, writers, photographers, and print costs.

Newburyport Bartlet Mall Renovation

CPA funds were expended in the summer of 2005 and provided for the services of a landscape architect and contractor. The design and construction of the Bartlet Mall Renovation Project was completed around June 2006. Elements of the overall project included:
• Removal of the invasive vegetation taking over the pond’s surface and blocking access to the pond’s shoreline;
• Installing a 6-ft wide gravel pathway around the pond’s edge and a shoreline plaza, as well as restoring the gravel pathway at the upper level;
• Installing Newburyporter lights along the walkway around the park for pedestrians, and replacing the floodlights;
• Extending promenade around George Washington statue at Eppa Way;
• Replacing fence and sidewalk around playground at northwestern corner of park;
• Replacing deteriorated concrete stairway with granite, adding a new stairway, and restoring two other granite stairways;
• Pruning park trees;
• Adding benches and picnic tables.

Newburyport Fruit St. Historic District

The grant supported the services of an architectural historian and completion of a survey report of all properties on Fruit Street - a short street that extends from High Street to Prospect Street and largely includes Federal-style homes.

The report was completed in 2005 and the City Council adopted an ordinance establishing the Fruit Street District, Newburyport’s first local historic district, on October 27, 2007.
