Acton Jones Playground Surfacing Expansion

Located in South Acton, Jones is the sole municipal playground in that area of Town, convenient to many South Acton neighborhoods. In keeping with the Town’s recreation goals in the Open Space and Recreation Plan, as well as the expressed desire of many residents, a fully accessible playground is greatly needed. The funds will be used to fund poured rubber surfacing around all play structures at the Jones Field Playground to ensure a more accessible playground to people with all abilities.

Acton NARA Sports Pavilion

Funds will be used to complete the NARA Sports Pavilion "south building", which will house an urgent need for NARA Summer Camp office, onsite Recreation office, snack bar, and storage for valuable equipment. Both buildings will also serve as a shelter for campers in the event of severe weather. At this time, the south building (Phase 2) only has the exterior complete.

Acton AHA -348-364 Main Street Development

Support pre-development costs for the development of 40 units of elder/disabled affordable rental housing at 348-364 Main Street. The housing units will be for low-income households whose income is below 60% of median income. Four of the units will be barrier free, all will be universally accessible and 8-10 will be for households under 30% median income. Two of the units will be two-bedrooms to allow for live-in aide and six of the units will be set aside for households under 60 with disabilities.

Acton Acton Pencil Factory Bridge: Phase 1 Design

The project will make one of Acton's most important historical resource, the North Acton Pencil Factory, more accessible to the public by creating a 320 foot accessible path through the historical site. The path will connect the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (BFRT), over Nashoba Brook via a new bridge, to the informational kiosk located on the Trail through Time (TTT).

Great Barrington Construct Inc. rental assistance and microloans

Construct will continue its emergency rental assistance program currently funded with CPA funds that were appropriated to the Housing Trust Fund. The rental assistance program helps low- and moderate-income people stay housed when they are unemployed, underemployed, and has been especially important in a health crisis when people need to quarantine, and it has a benefit of helping small landlords stay afloat.

Great Barrington Mahaiwe Theater emergency doors

The Mahaiwe needs to replace the emergency doors on the west side of the building. Not only are these needed to make the historic building functional, they can also serve as additional access points. The project will replace the doors and regrade a portion of the alley to prevent stormwater intrusion that damaged the existing doors.

Great Barrington McAllister Wildlife Refuge

The Conservation Commission proposes to continue its multi-year preservation work of this well used open space by removing areas of invasive shrubs and bittersweet in the forests and fields, preserving views, clearing public trails, and improving wildlife habitat.

Great Barrington Ramsdell Library archeological

The Town will utilize these funds for an archeological study of the library grounds. This study is required in order to do seek state funding for improvements on the site and the building, including anything from a temporary handicapped ramp or a full scale building renovation.

Great Barrington First Congregational Church - Manse restoration

The FCC of Great Barrington must make extensive exterior repairs to the historic manse. The structure is listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places. This phase will repair the Main Street and Pleasant Street facades of the building, parts of which are in danger of failure and collapse. The CPA grant represents 50% of the project cost of this phase, and the Church is seeking grants and fundraising for the remaining 50%. The benefit of this project is historic preservation of a landmark Main Street building, and the grant does not fund the religious activities of the Church.

Great Barrington Historical Commission scattered site research

The Town will hire an expert historical consultant to conduct research on, and catalogue and document, a variety of sites around town. A preliminary list of sites important to town history includes old river crossings, old railroad infrastructure, remnants of historic sites such as the Day Rubber Factory, charcoal hearths, and early electrical transmission and trolley infrastructure.

Great Barrington Clinton Church Restoration

This is phase 2 of the restoration of the former Clinton AME Zion Church building, the oldest extant Black church building in Berkshire County. Over the decades it was instrumental in community affairs and is directly associated with W.E.B DuBois. In Phase 1 emergency structural issues were completed. In phase 2, CCR will implement structural repairs, remediation, and utility work. This CPA grant will be more than matched by over $400,000 from other grant and fundraising sources.

Great Barrington Rail trail resurfacing

The Town will improve the existing rail trail by installing a crushed stone path, improve accessibility and fixing the ponding and mud problems. The path connects to the new Main Street sidewalk and also the cemetery, making for an important walking / recreation loop in Housatonic.

Great Barrington Lake Mansfield water quality study

The Town will conduct a multi-year study of Lake Mansfield’s water quality as part of the long term preservation of this critical open space and recreation resource. The project will judge the long term success of previous stormwater improvement projects in the watershed, help the Town understand how the lake is changing over the years, and how it might be impacted by climate change.

Sturbridge Master Trails Plan

In 2012, the Sturbridge Recreation Master Trails Plan Subcommittee coordinated the preparation of a trails Master Plan for the town. It is a comprehensive look at the trail system and includes dozens of resources needed for implementation. One important element that is lacking in the master plan is a map showing how the various town properties and trails are connected, either physically or ecologically. This update will bring the plan up to date, to be more useful and valuable.

Sturbridge Accessing Recreational Area of Streeter Beach

Streeter Road was abandoned by the Town in 1957. This new driveway would be designed and constructed to provide access to the beach area and not interfere with the traffic at the adjacent parcel. The overall goal is to reopen Streeter Beach to the public by leasing the site from the Army Corp of Engineers.
