Amherst East Street School and Belchertown Road Affordable Housing Development:

Wayfinders is requesting CPA funds to support tasks that will lead to the construction and leasing of mixed income apartments located at the East Street School and 72, 76, and 80 Belchertown Road sites. CPA funds will be used for design, engineering, pre-development diligence, and construction. Wayfinders will enter into a Land Development Agreement for the town-owned land to create approximately 70 units between the two sites. The recommended award amount is based on the size of the original ask, and on Town staff confirming that Wayfinders will work with the town to access $600,000 in other sources of funds (for a total town funding support of $1,000,000.)

Amherst Amherst Historical Society and Museum– Preservation of Five Paintings by Mabel Loomis Todd

This proposal seeks funds for conservation treatment of five paintings by Mabel Loomis Todd that are currently in a fragile and damaged state. The work to be performed requires the skills of an expert and will be conducted by R. Michelson Galleries commencing in July of 2023. The paintings represent the work of a skilled female artist from an earlier time, and the Museum is planning a new exhibition featuring the works later in the summer. These five paintings cannot be displayed until they are repaired.

Amherst Amherst Historical Commission – Historic Barn and Outbuilding Assessment Pilot Program

This program seeks funds to create an Historic Barn/Outbuilding Assessment Program, as a pilot. The funds will be used specifically for condition and rehabilitation/repurposing assessments of historic barns and outbuildings in Amherst. Private owners will need to match pilot program funds on a 50/50 basis in order to participate. Since 2017, twenty-one requests for demolition of Historic Barns and Outbuildings have come before the Historical Commission. By providing funds for the crucial assessment step, the Historical Commission hopes to create opportunities for preservation that might not otherwise exist.

Amherst South Congregational Church Amherst – South Congregational Church Steeple Restoration & Preservation:

The South Congregational Church is seeking funds to perform a complete restoration of its steeple. The steeple is leaning precariously to the Southeast due to a cracked beam and rotted posts. The steeple supports an 850-pound Revere Company bell, and a 200-pound weathervane which has been removed recently due to safety concerns. This important historic building was dedicated in 1825 and is approaching its 200th anniversary. The church is extensively utilized and supports a wide range of community-based organizations.

Amherst Town of Amherst – Recreation & Passive Conservation Area Improvements:

The trails system in Amherst are extensively utilized and very popular. The Town manages over 80 miles of trails and 2,000 acres of open space. There is a large backlog of needed repairs and a constant need for improvements to the Amherst trail network. CPA funds are requested for repairs to trails, bridges, bog bridges, parking, signage, beaches, and accessibility improvements. The CPA funds will also pay for materials and rental equipment to assist with much needed ongoing restoration and rehabilitation work.

Amherst Amherst Community Connections

proposal seeks to continue ACC’s Rental Subsidy program for three years. The program benefits families and individuals in Amherst who experience housing insecurity. This program will provide 12 households with ongoing monthly rental vouchers, each in the amount of $400 per month to help pay for rent. In addition, the funds will provide for payment to ACC of an ongoing $75 monthly rent related administrative cost, for each of the 12 households. ACC will separately provide case management services to assist beneficiaries in obtaining permanent housing, increasing their income, and addressing their housing obstacles.

Amherst Amherst Cemetery Assoc. – Dickinson Farmhouse Roof

The Dickinson Farmhouse located on the grounds of the Wildwood Cemetery is one of the oldest buildings in Amherst having been built circa 1790. It was deeded to the Amherst Cemetery Association in 1897 by Fidelia Dickinson. The Farmhouse serves as an office, visitor center, and central meeting place for the cemetery. The roof has significant issues with leaking and openings around the chimneys, thereby exposing the structure to ongoing damage from the elements. The CPA funds will be used to fully replace the roof including the underlying plywood, and moldings. The funds will not be used for any work on the chimneys.

Amherst Town of Amherst – War Memorial Pool Improvements

The War Memorial Pool is heavy utilized by Amherst families, individuals, and surrounding communities. In addition, the pool supports Amherst Recreation programs, camps, and youth swimming lessons. This project seeks funding for significant improvements that need to the be made in order to keep the pool operational. The ADA list chair is not functioning and needs replacement, the pool lining needs replacement, and there is a significant water leak in the pool drainage system resulting in an estimated loss of up to 2,000 gallons each day that the pool is filled.

Amherst ort River Community Recreational Fields

This proposal seeks funding to support the replacement and improvement of playing fields at the Fort River Elementary School site. Fort River area is heavily utilized by community members as well as Amherst Ultimate Frisbee, and The Amherst Youth Soccer Association, among other groups. Many community members expressed support for this proposal. The Amherst School Committee voted 4-0 in favor of endorsing this proposal, and the Superintendent of Schools expressed his broad support for the proposal as well.

Amherst Town of Amherst – War Memorial Bathhouse and Area Preliminary Design

The bathhouse at War Memorial Pool was constructed in 1953 and is in disrepair and in need of replacement. The Pool will not be able to remain open If it is not replaced soon. This design project has two components. The first involves a comprehensive site design for an enhanced War Memorial area as envisioned in the 2019 Weston and Sampson Athletic Facilities Strategic Plan. This will assist with the determination of scope of usage for the bathhouse, and if it would be available for just pool attendees, or also for the greater Community Field and nearby areas. The second is the preliminary design of a new bathhouse.

Braintree Delorey Field at Watson Park

Delorey Field at Watson Park will be fully reconstructed. This is a Little League Baseball facility that has been the home of East Braintree Little League for decades. By bringing the field dimensions into compliance with current standards, the facility can be of greater use to the families of the Town and surrounding neighborhood. In addition to modernizing the baseball facility with new fields, fencing and dugouts, the project will bring the facility into ADA compliance.

Somerville Elizabeth Peabody House Window Restoration

The Elizabeth Peabody House will renovate windows throughout the historic building at 277 Broadway from which the organization operates its programs to benefit children and families. The project will replace inappropriate windows on the first floor and will restore and preserve the tall stained glass windows on the second floor. The organization will use funds from private donors to treat the small sections of stained glass which contain religious imagery. The project also includes the restoration of exterior trim around the windows, installing a historically-accurate three-paned window above the main doors, replacing the main doors with wood-paneled doors, and restoring the three clock faces in the tower of the building.

Somerville Mudflat Studio Facade Preservation Study

Mudflat Pottery School, Inc. will prepare an assessment of current conditions and a plan to preserve original decorative elements on the façade of their building at 81 Broadway in East Somerville, a former movie theater converted to a pottery arts school and studio. The study represents the first phase of the restoration project; a future second phase will entail hiring contractors to make recommended repairs.

Bridgewater PARTHENON FRIEZE RESTORATION

In 1912 the McElwain's donated 5 plaster cast, Parthenon friezes to the newly build McElwain School. After decades removed from the abandoned school in the early 2000's the friezes become damaged - an Ad-hoc restoration committee searched out original manufacturer to repair, and be restored for display in the new Town Hall in Bridgewater

This project implements a previous CPA-funded design phase for the expansion and renovation of Somerville Junction Park, which combines an existing 1 acre passive park with an adjacent 0.5 acre City-owned lot that had been used for parking to create new park amenities adjacent to the MBTA Somerville Community Path. Improvements will include a large passive lawn area, native pollinator plant beds, ADA accessible walking paths, overlooks, fixed and movable lounge seating, cafe and picnic tables, a water bottle filler, bike repair station, cooling water mist stations, and artistic elements calling back to the history of Somerville Junction Park.

Seed funding for the design of a new park at 215 Somerville Ave, a 0.2 acre parcel in East Union Square the City purchased in 2018. The goal is to create a pocket park which adds green space to a neighborhood that currently lacks tree canopy and walkable access to open space.

Somerville Blessing of the Bay Path design

The Mystic River Watershed Association (MyWRA) in partnership with the City of Somerville will continue improvements of Blessing of the Bay Park, following a vision that was prepared under a previous CPA grant. This phase will entail the completion of 100% design and permitting to facilitate the creation of a one-half mile shared use community path by converting 0.61 acres of roadway to expand the area of the park. The project will also incorporate shade trees and green infrastructure to increase tree canopy and improve the health of the riverfront.
