Gloucester WHITE-ELLERY HOUSE STABILIZATION AND PRESERVATION

The funds shall be utilized to assist in the stabilization and preservation of the small wooden-framed barn located adjacent to the historic White-Ellery House (1970), just off Grant Circle. The barn was built c. 1740 and has been owned by the Museum for many years. Some stabilization work was done in 2009-10, however, additional work urgently needs to be done to save the building. This includes reinforcement of the roof frame; installation of a new wood shingle roof; residing of the building including clapboards, trim, doors, and window coverings; shoring up of the fieldstone foundation; re-grading of the area immediately surrounding the barn to redirect storm water runoff away from the structure; and the installation of a fire detection system and burglar alarm within the building. The barn is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) holds a preservation restriction on the structure. All work will be done with MHC’s approval and under the supervision of a preservation consultant and the staff of the Cape Ann Museum.

Concord White Pond Restoration

Slope restoration will be accomplished through removal and replacement of old concrete steps, improved and directed access points to minimize slope erosion, and plantings and erosion controls to stabilize eroded slopes in five locations.

Scituate WHEELER PARK WINDOW REPLACEMENT

Owned by SHA, Wheeler Park II is an affordable housing facility built in 1975 off Common Street and provides housing for primarily elderly and disabled residents. Great Barrington Wheeler Farmstead Preservation phase 1b

The Great Barrington Historical Society will utilize $24,250 of CPA funds for the next phase of historic preservation at the Wheeler farmhouse, an 18th Century, National Register of Historic Places-listed structure. The Society will replace the antiquated and unsafe knob and tube wiring in the farmhouse. The work is needed in order to further the restoration of the building and to make the structure fit for its intended purpose as the GBHS headquarters and Town museum. The museum is open for free to the public, and it provides educational opportunities for local school students and visitors to town.

Great Barrington Wheeler Farmstead preservation

After twelve years of concerted efforts in preserving the original Historic farmhouse, and readying it to be a public, accessible museum of Town history, the Society is moving into the next phase of preserving this historic property. Using CPA funds and private grants, this phase will renovate the second floor into an education and research center, finish the Wagon House and summer kitchen, and depending on costs, begin work on restoration of the barns and silo.
