seeks to acquire portions of the land formerly used as the Hickory Ridge Golf Course on West Pomeroy Lane in South Amherst. The Fort River meanders through the middle of this property, and is one of the highest conservation priorities of the Town, which has spent decades protecting acres of land along its banks and watershed. This is an incredible opportunity to permanently protect over 1.4 miles of the Fort River and its floodplain.

Amherst Town of Amherst – Recreation & Passive Conservation Area Improvements:

The trails system in Amherst are extensively utilized and very popular. The Town manages over 80 miles of trails and 2,000 acres of open space. There is a large backlog of needed repairs and a constant need for improvements to the Amherst trail network. CPA funds are requested for repairs to trails, bridges, bog bridges, parking, signage, beaches, and accessibility improvements. The CPA funds will also pay for materials and rental equipment to assist with much needed ongoing restoration and rehabilitation work.

This proposal seeks to restore the roofs at two historic municipal buildings, replacing approximately 150 slates between the two sites along with other restoration work. The roofs of both buildings are approaching the end of their lifespan and this work is critical to preventing future leaks and protecting the interiors of these buildings.

This land would provide an opportunity for a trail connection between two existing conservation areas, while the eastern portion of the site could continue as active farmland or be used for a community garden. An intermittent stream, part of a larger wildlife corridor running from Leverett to the Mill River, runs north to south through the middle of this property.

Amherst Town of Amherst – War Memorial Bathhouse and Area Preliminary Design

The bathhouse at War Memorial Pool was constructed in 1953 and is in disrepair and in need of replacement. The Pool will not be able to remain open If it is not replaced soon. This design project has two components. The first involves a comprehensive site design for an enhanced War Memorial area as envisioned in the 2019 Weston and Sampson Athletic Facilities Strategic Plan. This will assist with the determination of scope of usage for the bathhouse, and if it would be available for just pool attendees, or also for the greater Community Field and nearby areas. The second is the preliminary design of a new bathhouse.

Amherst Town of Amherst – War Memorial Pool Improvements

The War Memorial Pool is heavy utilized by Amherst families, individuals, and surrounding communities. In addition, the pool supports Amherst Recreation programs, camps, and youth swimming lessons. This project seeks funding for significant improvements that need to the be made in order to keep the pool operational. The ADA list chair is not functioning and needs replacement, the pool lining needs replacement, and there is a significant water leak in the pool drainage system resulting in an estimated loss of up to 2,000 gallons each day that the pool is filled.

This proposal seeks funding for the development of a strategic master plan focusing on Community Field and the Regional Schools (High School and Middle School) in the Town Center. Funding would be used for architectural and engineering services to conduct existing conditions evaluations, program demand assessment and development of a strategic plan with associated designs and cost estimates. The Amherst Regional Schools have already budgeted $30,000 in addition to the $50,000 CPA funding.

Amherst Town of Amherst- Cole Property Acquisition

This proposal seeks funds to preserve approx. 7 acres known as the Cole Property located at 1194 West Street for conservation and public passive recreation purposes. The property is one of the few remaining unpreserved parcels at the base of the Mount Holyoke range, abuts Sweet Alice Conservation Area and will provide trail access for Amherst residents to the Mount Holyoke Range State Park. The property contains two perennial streams that feed the Plum Brook, forested wetlands, a 3 acre agricultural field, and is part of a very important wildlife corridor.

Amherst Town of Amherst- Epstein Property Acquisition

This proposal seeks funds to preserve approx. 30.4 acres known as the Epstein Property located along Bay Road in South Amherst. The property includes one of the largest ponds in Amherst known as Epstein’s pond, connectivity to the Mt Holyoke Range and wetland, undeveloped woodland, and meadow habitat. The property abuts the Sweet Alice Conservation Area and will provide access to the Mt Holyoke Range State Park. The Town has been awarded a LAND grant from the State for $195,000 towards the purchase of this property.

Amherst Town of Amherst- Groff Park Modernization

This proposal seeks funding to rehabilitate Groff Park with a new spray park, pavilion, playground and accessibility improvements. This funding would be directed toward the playground and pavilion and general amenities. The Town is seeking to fund the complete restoration as one construction project for efficiency and cost reasons. Groff Park is one of the most widely used recreation areas in Town. The park offers formal recreation fields, concession area with bathrooms, hiking trails, open space for passive recreation, wading pool, playground and picnic areas with grills. The park is used year round for organized activities as well as passive recreation. This project will make the spray park, playground and new pavilion fully accessible to serve a diverse population and range of users

Amherst Town of Amherst- Groff Park Modernization

seeks to complete the construction of improvements to Groff Park. Previous CPA appropriations have funded the park design, purchase of playground and splash park equipment, and construction and installation of the park. This final $110,000 will provide a contingency in case of differing site conditions or other cost overruns; the initial contingency is lower than expected due to higher than expected construction bids. Construction at the park has already begun.

Amherst Town of Amherst- Kieras Property Acquisition

This proposal seeks funds to preserve approx. 3 acres on the south side of Russellville Road along the Amherst/Hadley line for agricultural purposes. Due to its small size, the parcel can’t be protected through an Agricultural Preservation Restriction (APR) or Chapter 61. Much of the surrounding land has been protected through these programs, and purchase of this parcel is an opportunity to increase the contiguous block of preserved farmland. In addition to its value as farmland, other natural resources found on the site include a vernal pool, land mapped for endangered species (Eastern Spadefoot Toad) and location over a medium yield aquifer.

Amherst Town of Amherst- Mill River Basketball Courts

This proposal seeks funds to resurface and refurbish the basketball courts at Mill River Recreation Area. The two courts are in extremely poor condition. The surface needs to be replaced, treated and sealed. Courts need to be relined and painted. Hoops structures are unstable and need to be removed, stabilized and reset in their foundations. All 4 backboards need to be replaced and finally, two new 8’ hoops will be installed to encourage more children and youth to utilize the facility. The improvements are part of an ongoing effort to modernize Mill River Recreation Area. Last year a $50,000 appropriation was given but will not be sufficient as it was discovered the entire subsurface will need to be replaced in order to complete the job properly and make the courts last.
