CPA Adoption Update: Monterey Advances CPA to November Ballot

Town of Monterey Places CPA on November BallotThe town of Monterey is now the second community to advance CPA adoption to the November ballot, just a few days after Reading passed their own town meeting vote. This is the first time that residents in Monterey have ever voted on CPA adoption, but local support from the town's Planning Board and Housing Committee ensured that the CPA measure will appear as a ballot question later this year.

Voters in Monterey will now decide whether or not to adopt a 3% CPA surcharge for their community with exemptions for the first $100,000 of residential property and for low income and low & moderate income senior homeowners. Should the town adopt CPA, they are expected to raise approximately $140,000 in local CPA revenues annually for outdoor recreation, historic preservation, affordable housing, and open space projects. Adopting CPA would also make the town eligible to receive all three rounds of the annual distributions of funds from the statewide Community Preservation Trust Fund, monies that are available only to communities that have adopted the Act.

Town meeting season isn't over yet, so we may see more communities join Monterey and Reading in voting on CPA adoption later this year. Keep an eye on our CPA elections page for further updates.
