Wellesley Wellesley HIstorical Society - Wellesley Individual and Family Archival Collection

The goal of this project is the long-term preservation of historical materials (manuscripts, photographs, personal correspondence, diaries) of notable Wellesley residents including William Baker, Katherine Lee Bates, the Hunnewell Family, William Morton. At completion of this project, materials will be accessible to researchers, students and interested members of the community. In addition, the collections will be ready for possible digitization.

Wellesley Wellesley Historic District Guidelines

The Planning Board is seeking to develop historic district guidelines that will provide unambiguous guidance on the rehabilitation of existing properties as well as new construction in the local historic districts in town. The new guidelines will serve as the basis for the review process by the Historic District Commission as well as provide guidance to Wellesley residents looking to undertake historically appropriate renovations to their properties.

Wellesley Natural Resources Commission - Vernal Pool Studay

This grant will allow the NRC to begin the first phase of a project at the vernal pool located in the tract of land, the North 40, purchased by the Town from Wellesley College in 2015. This phase will include further study of the vernal pool area as well as the development of schematic designs and bid documents for a boardwalk and overlook are with educational signage.

Wellesley Restoration of WWI Memorial Grove

This grant will allow for the restoration of a memorial grove of trees planted in tribute to Wellesley residents who served in WWI, with six specific trees planted in memory of Wellesley citizens lost to the war. The project will also include informational signs and markers outlining the history of the grove and its historical significance.

Wellesley Natural Resources Commission - Small Weed Harvester

This project will assist the NRC with the purchase of a small weed harvester for use in the Town's smaller ponds for the removal of rooted plant material to maintain the ponds for recreational use and preserve the wildlife habitats.

Wellesley Restoration of Sprague Clock Tower

This grant will support the historic preservation portions of a restoration project at the Sprague Clock Tower in Elm Park which is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. The funds will allow for the restoration of the cupola and bell.

Wellesley Trail Counter Technology

These funds will allow the Department of Public Works to acquire mobile trail monitoring equipment, TrfX, which will provide the Town with accurate counts of trail usage to help with planning for trail maintenance, preservation and improvement efforts.

Wellesley Preservation and Renovation of the Old Electric Substation

This project will preserve and renovate the old electric substation for expanded use as a telecommunications hub as well as storage space. The building was designated as being of historic significance and this work will make the structure weather-tight. This is phase one of a planned two-phase project.

Wellesley Natural Resources Commission - Mobile Phosphorous Inactivation Unit

This grant will allow the NRC to purchase a mobile phosphorus inactivation unit, equipment that will deliver aluminum polychloride to the smaller ponds in Wellesley to limit the phosphorous which allows unwanted plant growth in the ponds.

Wellesley Wellesley Historical Society - Business, Club and Organization Archival Collections

The goal of this project is the processing and long-term preservation of materials from Wellesley's important businesses, clubs and organizations. The grant will allow collections to be organized, labeled and preserved for use by researchers, students and interested Wellesley residents. Finding Aids will be created and posted on the Wellesley Historical Society website and will also be submitted to the Library of Congress/World Cat search engine.

Wellesley Historic Plaque Program

This grant funds the extension of a program under the control of the Wellesley Historical Commission which provides historic date markers for structures in Wellesley constructed more than 100 years ago. The Historical Commission estimates approximately 200 additional structures will qualify by 2019 and this grant will fund the research on the history of those buildings as well as the manufacturing of the plaques.

Wellesley Boardwalk/Observation Area at North 40 Vernal Pool

This project is the construction of a boardwalk and observation area, with educational signage, at the vernal pool located at the corner of Turner and Weston Roads, within the parcel of land known as the North 40.

Wellesley Reconstruction of Sprague Field Tennis Courts

This project will completely rehabilitate the four currently unusable tennis courts at the Sprague Field athletic complex. The courts will be reoriented to a more north/south orientation will have a new base, sports surface asphalt and paint with new nets, fencing and signage.

This comprehensive analysis of the programmatic and facility needs at Morses Pond, including land surveys, site evaluation, schematic site planning and design, and cost estimates will allow the Recreation Department to take the next step in a possible rehabilitation of Morses Pond, an important Town recreation facility.

Wellesley Softball Fields Improvement

This project will develop schematic designs and construction drawings for the rehabilitation of two softball fields at the Hunnewell Fields complex. The improvements to the fields will include better drainage, regulation backstops and fencing, provisions to meet MIAA standards and make the fields ADA accessible.

Wellesley Fells Branch Library Roof

The oldest public building in Wellesley, the Fells Branch Library will undergo a renovation including a new roof. These funds will pay for the additional cost incurred in putting an historically accurate wood shingle roof rather than asphalt shingles.

Wellesley Phase I - Reconstruction of Duck Pond Bridge

Preliminary analysis has identified some structural issues with the pedestrian footbridge over Cold Spring Brook at the entrance to Town Hall. This project will entail a complete structural analysis and develop design and permitting for a new bridge, including bid documents.

Wellesley Gas Leak Detection Equipment

This purchase of gas leak detection equipment will allow the Town's Natural Resources Commission and Department of Public Works determine if failing trees are the victims of gas leaks and will alert them to leaks prior to planting new trees and shrubs.

Wellesley Stone Fish Ramp - Fuller Brook Park

The project calls for the construction of a "fish ladder" or a stone ramp to replace the concrete spillway located in the Fuller Brook just above Grove Street. This will facilitate the journey of alewife and other species of fish who journey upstream to the State Street Pond to spawn.

This funding will take the softball fields improvement project from schematic designs to bid documents and construction. The two fields will remain in their current locations with some adjustments to current conditions and will address drainage and safety issues. Wellesley Fells Library Learn and Play Pollinator Garden

This grant will fund the site preparation work for a children's pollinator garden at the site of the newly-renovated Fells Library. These funds will allow for the re-grading and pathway installation at the garden, making it handicap accessible. Some initial plantings will also be funded. This garden will be part of the pollinator corridor being established by the NRC.

Wellesley Restoration of Church Park

This appropriation will fund the restoration of the town-owned parkspace in the center of Wellesley across from the Wellesley Post Office. The project will involve the removal of the reamins of an old bus stop creating a new garden bed, upgrading the irrigation system, removal of invasive species and old plantings and the planting of new native trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcover. This wil be an addition to the NRC's pollinator corridor which is being establilshed around Town.

Wellesley Morses Pond Erosion Remediation

This grant will fund Phase I of a three-year plan for the remediation of the shoreline erosion around Morses Pond. A study funded with a CPA grant was undertaken by Horlsey Witten three years ago. The study identified 22 sites around the pond iin need of attention due to erosion. Eleven of those sites are on Town-owned land. This first phase of work will adress four of those sites.

Wellesley Perrin Park Basketball Court Restoration

This project will restore a deteriorated basketball court to usable condition and will include lines and a portable net for use as a pickle ball court as well.

Wellesley Hunnewell Field Complex Lighting Consultant

This appropriation will fund consultant fees to study the existing lights on the tennis courts, the multi-purpose field and Reidy Field at the Hunnewell Fields Complex to see how improvements can be made to the amount of hazardous glare and light trespass emitted and to improve the energy efficiency of the lights. In addition, the consultant will examine what possibilities exist for lighting the high school track and field.

Wellesley Lawn Conversion Pilot Project

This appropriation will fund a two-year program to convert a traditional grass, power-mowed lawn on town-owned land to a more ecologically valuable landscape with native grasses and wildflowers. The goal is to demonstrate the potential for pollinator friendly, low maintenance landscapes that can be used on public and private land, both residential and institutional, that are more environmentally friendly.

Wellesley Retrofit of Existing Lights at Hunnewell Tennis Courts and Diane Warren Multi-purpose Field

These funds will pay for the replacement of existing lights on the heavily used Hunnewell Field Tennis Courts and the multi-purpose field used for softball as well as football and soccer practices. The existing metal halide lights will be replaced with more efficient LED fixtures which emit less glare and light trespass and require less energy consumption.
