Gloucester Committee for the Arts - WPA Mural Restoration Phase II

The current project’s status has been refined since the initial but outdated National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funded 2009 assessment report, prior CPA updates, and applications. Resultant schedules for work from these prior documents omit important new discoveries in the collection and evaluation which this resubmission will correct. (One example, a mural slated for preservation in Phase II is part of a triptych by a different artist and title than identified in the NEH and other reports.

Gloucester Committee for the Arts - WPA Murals Restoration

The Gloucester Committee for the Arts (GCFA) will begin restoration work on City Hall's Works Progress Administration (WPA) Murals. The proposed restoration work was recommended in a condition report, which was funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and completed by a professional conservator. Gloucester's WPA murals are historically and culturally significant national treasures and are vital examples of Gloucester's cultural heritage.

Gloucester Housing Authority - Sheedy Park Roof Replacement

Project consists of replacement of the single-ply rubber membrane roof at the Gloucester Housing Authority's (GHA) State-aided 667-5 Sheedy Building Elderly Housing Development with new cold-applied modified bitumen roofing system. The existing 14,751 SF roof system is over 30 years old, has greatly deteriorated, leaking into the living areas of the building. The GHA has been forced to shutter one unit in the building and additional units will need to go offline if the roof is not replaced in the immediate future.

GLOUCESTER MEETINGHOUSE FOUNDATION - GREEN ENVELOPE PROJECT

The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation seeks to create a “Green Envelope” for Gloucester’s historic 1806 Meetinghouse to preserve the building from water infiltration and thermal loss in a manner that is consistent with high standards of historically-informed building preservation and energy sustainability practices. This includes: insulation for all vulnerable areas; windows, carpentry, and sealing in Cupola; and northeast roof and wall carpentry.

Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation - Meetinghouse Green

Meetinghouse Green is the multi-acre foreground to the historic 1806 Meetinghouse located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets, and is the only remaining large green space in the Historic District. Over the years the condition of the trees, crushed stone walkway, grassy area, and perimeter fencing have deteriorated posing an ongoing hazard to frequent visitors who enjoy the open space and for concertgoers attending the annual summer outdoor music series hosted by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation.

Gloucester Street Survey Update

The Survey Update will provide (1) a detailed assessment of Gloucester's inventory of historic properties and (2) comprehensive recommendations for priorities for updating and expanding the inventory. While the city's existing historic resources inventory is relatively comprehensive, gaps and omissions are recognized, given the size of the City and the age of many of the existing inventory forms. The earliest inventory forms for Gloucester were prepared in the 1970's.
